ABOUT MY WORK

It's a privilege to paint. That's not a statement made lightly.

Historically artists have suffered suppression of their artistic talent. Perhaps this came about via religion, establishment, government etc. Artists of the past have battled to allow the ultimate freedom we have today.

My own journey has been less traumatic, but, there have been times when I too felt restricted. I initialy followed a more traditional career path,  but as soon as life allowed, I studied art with a passion and overwhelming excitement.

There's always been other restrictions too, a specific gallery style, fashion, acceptability, to name a few. The internet has opened the doors to a global audience, where these limitations cease to be quite so important.

My struggle now is with the inner artist. In the past, I've painted realism, concentrating on landscape and still life. Outwardly successful, but looking inward, not so.

I read an article about the artist Hilma Af Klint, and her influences, and I suddenly understood.

The most difficult part of my work is moving into pure abstraction. To clear the mind, to take myself to another level, to force myself into the absorption of spiritual abstraction.

It's an overwhelming joy and a privileged to paint.

Inspired by the greats,  Peter Lanyon, Hans Hofmann,Richard Diebenkorn, Ivon Hitchens, Hilma Af Klint
